OUR STORY

A life spent in the water

Hello!
I'm Jess, the founder of Girls on Board. Growing up on Phillip Island, the ocean has always been a big part of my life. I caught my first wave at four years old and was competing by the time I was eight, inspired by my dad and older brother.

Surfing took me around the world, from competing to being part of the lifestyle documentary First Love in 2008. Over time, my relationship with surfing shifted. It became less about competition and more about the freedom, connection and joy that come from being in the water.

In 2012, I started Girls on Board with a simple idea: to create a space where more girls and women could find their place in surfing. A place to learn without judgement, build confidence and enjoy the experience, whatever their level.

What began as a surf school has grown into a community shaped by the people, the shared experiences and the moments that happen both in and out of the water.

For me, Girls on Board has always been about so much more than surfing. It's the people you meet, the friendships you make, the laughs in the water and the post surf car park catch ups. It's about creating a space where everyone feels welcome, can build confidence and enjoy being in the ocean.

I've always loved how surfing can take you places, both close to home and around the world. Some of my favourite experiences have come from travelling, exploring new waves, meeting new people and sharing those moments with others. It's a big part of what I love about surfing and something I hope to share through Girls on Board, whether that's here on Phillip Island or in a tropical paradise.

At the heart of it, I just want Girls on Board to be a place where people can connect, try new things, make memories and enjoy more good days in and out of the water.

See you in the water.
